The New River Gorge Bridge stands as an engineering marvel: a 3,030-foot-long single-span steel arch bridge—the longest in the Western Hemisphere—crafted from 88 million pounds of Cor-Ten weathering steel that blends naturally into the rugged Appalachian landscape. Opened in 1977, it towers 876 feet above the ancient New River below and serves as the centerpiece of Bridge Day®, West Virginia’s largest single-day festival. On this one special day each year, the bridge closes to traffic so spectators can walk across it while daredevils BASE jump into the gorge and rappellers descend from its catwalk—an unforgettable spectacle of courage and mountain heritage.
